4 Ways to Use Social Networking to Find a Job | Career Rocketeer

Social Networking Job SearchSocial networking has given us a lot in a short period of time—from allowing us to connect with people on the other side of the world to announcing company news quickly and easily.
However, one of its biggest benefits may just be the ease at which we look and find jobs. Beyond just looking for a listing, here are four ways you can make your search more effective:
Build your network. This is probably one of the biggest benefits of social networking. Take advantage of the ease of making connections (and grow your network) by doing the following:
  • Friending and following those you share interests with
  • Participating in meetups and Twitter chats
  • Sending personalized invite messages on LinkedIn
  • Answering questions on Quora and LinkedIn
  • Engaging in discussions on Facebook pages
The more you do, the better your network (and probably your job search) will be, which can help get your foot the door at organizations you'd like to work at.
Use search features. Social networking is designed to make our lives easier. Take this concept and apply it to searching for a job through popular platforms. For example, if you were using Twitter, you could search for a job using industry hashtags, or look for jobs through your favorite company pages on LinkedIn. Whatever method you decide to use, make sure your platforms reflect the kind of candidate you are. For example, it doesn't do you much good to apply for a job through LinkedIn if your profile isn't complete. Be sure your online image reflects your offline one.
Connect with influencers. Social networking allows us to connect with those who we wouldn't normally have the chance to, like high ranking executives, human resources professionals, investors, etc. As a job seeker, you now have the opportunity to network with these professionals by using social platforms.
Say you want to work for Company X. No matter how much following-up you do, you just can't get in. So, you decide to tweet Company X, as well as connecting with the organization and members of the company you've met on LinkedIn. Suddenly, people are a lot more responsive. Why? It could be because the avenue of communication is a whole lot easier to manage.  Therefore, it may be a good idea to connect and follow-up with those that work at the company you're targeting.
Easily show off your skills. You know you're a good candidate. However, how can an employer know this information? If you use social networking to your advantage, you can actually show off your skills easily and effectively. By completing your profiles, participating in groups and chats, and engaging in conversations across networks, you show that you not only understand social networking, but can also keep up with its changing nature. If you show off your skills and actually help others by providing value, you may find a backwards way into your dream organization. All you have to do is actually be present.

There is a code that has lived on in time, as long as man has had conscious thoughts and passed them on or written them down.  It is called the universal code – it covers basic ethics – it isn’t an abundance of good – actual “doing” good – but more of “not doing” bad or evil -> as some might call it.  It’s an internal, unwritten guide that tells us to not kick someone with a broken leg or push an old lady down, that taking a life is wrong and so is stealing someone’s land, that parents should care for their children.  Pretty basic stuff.
Almost everyone knows The Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Speak to others the way you would like to be spoken to. Conduct business the way you would like others to conduct business. Provide a service or product with the same integrity as you would like others to provide to you. Serve others the way you would like to be served. Kindness and uprightness go a long way.
These Rules of Engagement continue but with a bodily twist…  the bonus for living these rules is the gold – either in your bank account or in your heart…
Elbow out the competition. Take the lead from those around you. Be the best in your office; second isn’t good enough. Not everyone gets to work in a bullpen-type setting with ringing bells and whoops for finding the golden client/customer/candidate or closing a a big sale. If you are a lone ranger, make yourself your own competition; each week top yourself.  Make your service the best it can be and those you serve will take notice.
Keep your foot in the door. Stay current of new trends and technologies. While the tricks that got you here are still extremely valuable, don’t be that old dog. Try new things that make sense for you and your organization.  Most industries are changing rapidly, every day. Don’t get left out in the cold.
Stay on top of your game. Never stop learning. Never stop reading. Never stop practicing. Failure is eminent the moment you stop learning. If growth and development are imperative to a company’s survival, why would the human mind and body be any different?

Lend a hand. Serve when you can. Be charitably-minded. Know that what you have to give may be a benefit or detriment to a client, supervisor, customer, candidate, co-worker. Be of benefit - really, what’s the worse thing that can happen?
Keep your ear to the ground. Know who your competition is and what they accomplishing. Your drive to success can only be faster and better if you are trailing someone better or have someone nipping at your heels. Listen to what is said and watch what is done by those around, especially if they are one of the Three C’s: your Competitors, Clients, or Customers.
Take a knee. Face each day with appreciation. Gratitude cannot help but bring to surface positive thoughts and redeemable actions. When was the last time you performed a redeemable action?  Offer respect to those with whom you surround yourself.  As much as we would like to believe that this is a game, it is not. It is not Empire Avenue or the Sims or Bejewelled or even Foursquare.   It is life, it is your life. Life and business blend together almost imperceptibly these days. That gap is all but gone.  Make it count.
