As I am sitting here on my patio writing today, May 1st, I am amazed at the transformation around me in just the past week. Here in NYC this past month was the wettest, dreariest, most depressing April in recent memory – save for the holidays. As I sat in this same position writing last Sunday it was a colorless gray, overcast day and the trees, the park, and Sheepshead Bay and the Atlantic Ocean that I overlook appeared the same. Conversely, today as I look down on this exact same panorama I am amazed at what I see, a total transformation. Everything is in full bloom; the tulips are yellow, red, purple and blue, the pink and white cherry blossom tree is in full bloom, and all the foliage and shrubs around me are coming to life in vibrant pastel shades of green, violet, fuchsia and more, plus the waters in the bay and the ocean below appear a shimmering blue as does the cloudless May sky above.
So you may ask, why am I telling you all this and what has it to do with helping you find a job?
The answer is two-fold. First, what created this transformation in nature is what you need to emulate in your life. Second, the positive changes in your surroundings are what motivates a positive change in your mood and attitude.
April showers are comparable to the dreary tasks of putting in the extra effort to get your resume and LinkedIn page just right so that people can see and appreciate the real you and your full, as opposed to your partial value as a potential employee. It is the extra effort you put into connecting with the right people and actually communicating with them rather than making them another statistic on your network. The hardest part is identifying and getting the right people to recommend you and attest to what you do best. In April we till the soil and we plant the seeds while nature waters them. This is what job seekers must do all year round. You need to be proactive. Finding a new job is not your tulip garden, it is not a perennial. Once you lose your job a new one will not emerge without your exerting the necessary effort.
Which brings me to the second point, May flowers. If you put in the necessary effort, it will bloom. As the famous line told to Ray Kinsella, the Kevin Costner character in Field of Dreams, one of my personal favorite movies goes "If you build it, they will come.
This is the key to a job search. Keep a positive attitude and never give up on yourself. In your darkest and dreariest hour keep your focus on May when all of a sudden all of your hard work and effort transforms overnight with the two words that our future president (just kidding) Donald Trump only says only once every season; "Your Hired."
