Executives are always charged with having to show that they’re visionaries. How can you not if you're going to say that you want to help a company expand and grow? However, if you are that visionary that a company needs, you’d better be prepared to show your capabilities in your resume. Some ways to do this include:
Thinking From the End
As an executive, your job is to determine what you would like to see a company accomplish—and then decide how it could get there. A company only remains relevant in this ever-changing world by making regular adjustments as needed. If you can come in with fresh ideas, envision where you want the company to go, and then come up with ways to arrive at that place, you will be in good shape as a candidate.
So how do you do that? One great way is by showcasing your biggest accomplishments at your previous companies. In the briefest possible fashion, explain what you envisioned, how you brought those visions to life, and how each company benefited. You could also note in your resume some issues that you would like to resolve for the present company along with brief pointers on how you plan to get them done.
Know Each Company You Apply With
Knowing the ins and outs of each company you apply with should be a no-brainer at the executive level. If you’ve gone through the executive interviewing process at all, you know that it’s extensive and requires a lot from you—including your knowledge of the company.
But before you ever get to an interview, you need to prove that you know a lot about the company in order to provide a vision for it. Researching every bit of information you can—including historical data and recent press—is pertinent. So is finding out what the company needs from you so that you can envision where it needs to go.
Being an executive is hard work, but someone has to get the job done. If you have the nerve to label yourself a true executive, then don’t hesitate to show exactly how you reached your level and how your skills can help a company excel.
