In a tough economy, it’s not uncommon for people to look for jobs solely because they need the money. In fact, it’s rare to find a person who doesn’t include the desire for money in their list of reasons they’re seeking employment.
The problem with this approach to job seeking is that it often takes away from the issue at hand, which is what you can do to help a company that you’re hoping to work for. If you never thought about addressing this issue, take a look at 6 ways to push your employment goal beyond money.
1. Think About What You Would Do for No Money At All
Virtually everyone has something in their lives that they love to do—something they would do even if they didn’t get paid any money at all. It’s a good idea to think about what that one thing is for you. You may not be able to find a great paying job that falls directly into this category, but it could help steer you toward jobs that incorporate what you love so that you don’t seek them solely for the money.
2. Explore What You’re Really Good At
Also, it’s good to look at what you’re really good at within your chosen career. If you’re good at it, there’s a chance that you like something about it. Keep this in mind as you choose jobs to apply for.
3. Look for People In Your Field Who Love Their Jobs
Another way to start thinking past the money is to talk to people in your field who actually love what they do. Talk to them about their inspiration for going to work every day (e.g., making a difference, fulfilling personal goals, etc.). This could help you look for jobs that will help you to do the same.
4. Don’t Apply for Anything That You Would Truly Hate
Many job seekers apply for jobs that sound appalling to them even though they offer good money. This sets those seekers up for failure because it’s difficult to create a resume that sells a desire to work for the company if they really don’t want to.
5. Take a Long-Term Look at Your Career
If you’re not excited about a job you’re applying for, take a look past the job by exploring your long-term career goals. You may be able to find the passion for the job you’re interested in by thinking of how it can provide you with the skills you need to excel later in your career.
6. Get Selfless
It’s also good to realize that part of the reason you’re applying is to make a difference for the company. By thinking from this perspective, it’s easier to push past the idea of only making money.
By pushing your employment goal beyond money, it becomes easier to write a resume full of passion that explores why you really want the job. But even more important, you increase your odds of finding a job that fulfills both your short- and long-term goals.
